WAI Director General hosts two Commissioners of the ECOWAS Commission

Two ECOWAS Commissioners 1Dr. Morlaye Bangoura and Mr José João Monteiro Huco, ECOWAS Commissioner for Energy and Mines and ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Resources Management respectively, visited the West Africa Instituteon 8 January, 2015.

The two senior officials were on an official mission to Praia as part of measures to strengthen the cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Cabo Verde and the ECOWAS, through the empowerment of the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE).

two ECOWAS Commissioners 2The exchanges focused on reinforcing the partnership between ECOWAS and WAI with the aim to accelerate the process of regional integration by the people towards the realization of the ECOWAS vision 2020.

One of the fields of WAI being capacity building, the two Commissioners suggested a training seminar for Directors of ECOWAS integration in the members-states, and another for Directors of national customs. In addition, they proposed that WAI conducts studies on evaluation of public policies in ECOWAS member countries.

The two parties also addressed the issue of how various constituents of the West African society perceive the concept of regional integration. From the fruitful discussions, it emerged that the process of appropriating the concept needs to be supported by concrete actions in schools and universities, and through the media.

Two ECOWAS Commissioners 3Expressing her sincere thanks to the President of the ECOWAS Commission, HE Kadré Desire Ouedraogo, for the sustained support that ECOWAS provides for WAI, Prof. Dr. Djénéba Traoré informed the Commissioners about the creation of a Master Program in African Regional Integration at the University of Cape Verde (UNI-CV).

The Master Program is a product of the scientific partnership between WAI and the Center for European Integration Studies (ZEI) of the University of Bonn, Germany, with the technical support of the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Innovation (MESCI) of Cabo Verde and the University of Cabo Verde (UNI-CV). The opening of the training is planned for October 2015.
