Dr. Degol Mendes speaks on the challenges of introducing a single currency in the ECOWAS zone

MendesDr. Degol Mendes, from the Multilateral Supervision Directorate, Department of Macroeconomic Policies of the ECOWAS Commission ( Abuja , Nigeria ) , gave a lecture, on the theme "Challenges of the introduction the single currency in the ECOWAS zone" in the Conference room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( MIREX ) of the Republic of Cabo Verde, on April 4, 2014.



Mendes 2Organized by the West Africa Institute (WAI), in partnership with the MIREX, Banco Comercial do Atlântico, Caixa Económica de Cabo Verde and Ecobank, the conference saw a massive participation of audience coming from various sectors with interest in the theme.

The presentation had as its main objective to inform the Cape Verdean public on the potential and the opportunities that the implementation of the proposed ECOWAS single currency, expected to materialize in 2020, presents to Cape Verde.

Mendes audienceAfter a brief overview of the existing political organizations in the region namely: ECOWAS, UEMOA and WAMZ (West African Monetary Zone Future), Dr. Mendes made some recommendations on how to build bridges between policies of these organizations with a view to ensuring convergence.

The lecture triggered questions which were addressed by the speaker, followed by a lively and constructive debate among the several experts and stakeholders among the audience.

The conference ended with a visible demand for more of similar meetings.
