WAI and Friedrich Ebert Foundation communicate on the Malian crisis at the Institute for Democracy and Progress in Praia

Crise MaliAs part of its program of activities, the Institute for Democracy and Progress, located in Praia, organized a conference on the challenges of post – conflict Mali, on March 11, 2014. The aim of the meeting was to inform the Cabo Verdean public and foreign communities living in the country on the security and political situation in Mali and its impact on the whole West African region.

Invited by Prof. Dr. Aristides Lima, President of the Institute for Democracy and Progress, Speakers at the occasion were Prof. Dr. Djénéba Traoré, Director General of WAI and Annette Lohmann, Resident Representative of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Bamako, Mali. Professor Victor Borges, former Minister of Education of the Republic of Cabo Verde, assured the moderation of the debates.

Before an enthusiastic audience, the two interveners explained the causes and the consequences of the political and security crisis that in the early 2012 unexpectedly engulfed the entire territory of Mali, a country considered several years ago as "a good student of democracy."

The presentations raised many questions, including reasons for the coup of 22 March, 2012, the resurgence of the Tuareg rebellion and the radicalization of the islamic religion, following the jihadist invasion and the attempt to establish Sharia on the entire Malian territory. It was also noted that mediation efforts of ECOWAS, including the introduction of the Ouagadougou Agreements, and the several operations conducted by French Government to rout the secessionist and fundamentalist forces, prevented the worst.

The conference also warned that the Malian crisis is a major crisis that can pose a threat to global peace and security, if large-scale actions are not taken to ensure peace and security in the Sahel region.

You will find here  Cabo Verdean television  reporting of the conference.
