WAI hosts Agostinho Moreira and Joceline Varela for a two-month internship, from May 2 to July 2, 2019

61615645 367084867255819 2696875746877505536 nMr. Agostinho Moreira is a fourth year degree student in International Relations and Diplomacy at the University of Cabo Verde (Uni-CV). He is completing a two-month internship as part of his Master degree at the West Africa Institute (WAI) from May 2 to July 02, 2019. His dissertation focuses on the impact of free movement by sea for ECOWAS development, and is being supervised by Prof. Dr. Odair Barros Varela.

The main objective of this study is to understand how free movement by sea impacts on the development of ECOWAS and how it contributes to a better integration of Cabo Verde into the regional economy, taking into account the maritime transport project Sealink, the Free Trade and Movement Protocol, the Trade Liberalization Treaty, the Integrated Maritime Strategy and the ECOWAS Community Strategic Framework (CSF) which will be part of the implementation architecture of the Integrated Maritime Strategy of the African Union (AIMS).

The CSF aims at achieving the objectives of ECOWAS Vision 2020 and the objectives of the ECOWAS Revised Treaty of July 1993.

The internship at WAI will be beneficial to Mr. Moreira due to its location in Praia and the fact that it is the only think tank in West Africa, whose objective is to promote knowledge with a focus on regional integration and social transformations.

Ms. Joceline Varela is also a fourth year degree student in International Relations and61052065 384486615497002 9076369127517454336 n 2 Diplomacy at Uni-CV carrying out a two-month internship at WAI from May 2 to July 02, 2019 in the framework of her Master degree. The dissertation, under the scientific supervision of Prof. Dr. Odair Barros Varela, focuses on the issue of food and nutritional security in the ECOWAS Member States.

The main objective of this study is to understand the issue of food security in the ECOWAS zone on the basis of the Regional Food Security Program and the Food Security Storage Support Project in West Africa. The results of the research will serve to organize information relevant to an analysis of the food and nutritional situation and contribute to focus tools for the prevention of nutritional crises and the management of food.

The internship at WAI will be beneficial to Ms. Varela, due to the institute's relationship with the topic of the study and to its field of research on regional integration and social transformations in West Africa, which contributes to a thorough and concise investigation in order to obtain significant results.
