DebMs Débora Gonçalves is a second-year student of the Master of European Governance at the University of Luxembourg completing a three-month internship as part of her Master thesis at the West Africa Institute (WAI) (February 27th – May 31st). Her dissertation focuses on Policy Coherence for Sustainable Development in Cabo Verde with emphasis on the policy areas of energy, blue economy and tourism. This research is part of the GAMMA Program of the Institute of Ecology (INECOL) in Xalapa, Mexico, under the supervision of WAI fellow, Professor Harlan Koff.

The main purpose of the study is to assess if coherence exists between the three aforementioned policy areas and in what degree is the coherence sustainable in the long term. It takes into consideration the established Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development (PEDS) introduced by the Cabo Verdean government for the period of 2017-2021 that is aligned with the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations. The findings of this research aim to provide relevant information to the various actors involved in the development of Cabo Verde.

The internship at the WAI will be of great benefit to Ms Gonçalves due to being located in Praia, that will grant proximity to the relevant actors that are to be interviewed as part of the research.
