WAI Director General, Member of the 2018 Jury of the ECOWAS Support Program for Research and Innovation (PARI)


IMG 1196At the invitation of the Department of ECOWAS in charge of Education, Science and Culture, led by Commissioner Prof. Leopoldo Amado, the Director General of the West Africa Institute (WAI), Prof. Djénéba Traoré, took part in the work of the Jury of the Research and Innovation Support Program (PARI).

As part of the promotion of research products, the ECOWAS Commission launched in August 2018 the first edition of IRAP, which is a competitive program to promote scientific excellence. It aims to select the two (02) best research projects submitted by research teams in the region.

The ECOWAS Research and Innovation Support Program (PARI) is a competitive program that aims to select the best projects submitted by researchers through calls for applications. It is included in the ECOWAS Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Action Plan (ECOPOST, Strategic Axis 3, Activities 3.2.1 to 3.2.3) and is in close alignment with the Community Strategic Framework. (CSC) 2016-2020 of the ECOWAS, the African Union Strategy on Science, Technology and Innovation (STISA), the African Union Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-30).

The program has been implemented to respond to the many challenges of the researchEcowas 2 sector (obsolescence and degradation of equipment and infrastructure, low production of researchers, development of regional research programs, etc.).

The PARI pursues the following specific objectives:
1) Financing research on a competitive basis of call for applications
of research projects contributing to the fight against poverty and
having an impact on the development of the region;
2) Promote the mobility of researchers through the development of regional projects;
3) Support research laboratories to strengthen their capacities (equipment and connectivity) and access to scientific information;
4) Build the capacity of young researchers to ensure the next generation of scientists of the research institutes within the region.

 

The PARI program provides a grant of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) perfield of research.

Ecowas 1For the 2018 Edition, the following disciplines have been selected: Environmental Sciences for the field of Life and Earth Sciences and Mathematics and Physics for the field of Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation.

The name of the laureate will be published in due time by the ECOWAS Commission.

On the sidelines of the Jury's work, WAI Director General met Mr. Kalilou Traoré, the Director of Cabinet of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Commissioner Leopoldo Amado and Commissioner Mamadou Traoré in charge of Industry and Private Sector Promotion to address issues related to the ECOWAS-WAI partnership.
