Cover Page TombouctouThe article presents the city of Timbuktu as a symbol of religious tolerance and a place of where populations from diverse origins and cultures are living. Classified as World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1988, the famous «Pearl of the Desert» of yesterday has become a martyr city, following the tragic events of 2012 that have deeply shaken Mali and neighboring countries. How can peace be restored in the Sahel so that the struggle for the sustainable development of these regions can take place?

The example of Timbuktu is taken to address the reflection on the emergency to end armed conflicts and terrorism in Africa.
